Desert Trails Hiking Club provides hiking opportunities in the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs area.

Mary Barlow, Secretary, enjoys sharing her time between Lake Arrowhead, Spain and the Coachella Valley where she's also a member of the Coachella Valley Hiking Club and Costa Blanca Mountain Walkers.

Carl Gorretta, Hike-Leader Coordinator, has enjoyed visiting the Coachella Valley for the last nine years. Since retiring in 2001, Carl has had more time to pursue interests in hiking, photography and other outdoor activities. Vancouver, Washington is home during winter and summer with Rancho Mirage home base in spring and fall. He enjoys desert visits from his four sons and eight grandchildren.

Rich Jarvinen, Hike Schedule and Community/Trails Coordinator, and his DTHC hike-leader wife, Suzanne, are from Colorado Springs, Colorado, with a second home in Indio. Recently retired from energy and environmental consulting, Rich has been focusing on trail and open space stewardship, both here in The Desert and back in Colorado. Hiking with the many knowledgeable Desert Trails members since 2007 has stimulated Rich’s interest in the plants, rocks and animals with which we share our trails. In addition to hiking, Rich enjoys running, biking, swimming, golf, tennis, scuba, skiing and travel.

Dave & Cathy Luckwell, Communications, hale from Thorsby, near Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and winter at the home we purchased in Indio. We have 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren, who all reside in and around Edmonton. Our love for the desert has brought us to the Coachella Valley for the past 3 winters, with having spent many holidays in the valley over the past 25 years. We enjoy hiking, golf, cycling, traveling and spending time with our children and Grandchildren.

Dave McGuire,Website Coordinator, and his wife, Karin, have been snowbird residents of La Quinta since 2007 and Hinsdale, Illinois, [Chicago suburb] for over 30 years. Since retirement in 2006 from the food service industry, Dave keeps busy with hiking, bicycling, outdoor photography, travel and tinkering in computer technology. DTHC Hike Leaders exposed us to the wonders of the Coachella Valley in our first season here. We keep coming back to the Club because we enjoy the fun, friendships, exercise and helping where we can.

Sandra Reed, Socials Coordinator, was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and has an Honours BA from McMaster University. She is a retired bank manager with Scotiabank, including a position as Director National Sales Training, Scotia Insurance. Sandy is married to Gary and has three children and two grandchildren. They live 6 months of the year in Blue Mountains (2 hours NW of Toronto) Ontario, Canada, and own a home here in Rancho Mirage, CA. They’ve been visiting the Palm Springs area since 1996 and joined DTHC in the fall of ’07. She likes to hike, bike, golf, swim, shop, and go out to happy hours.

Gary Ward, Treasurer and Membership Coordinator, and his wife, Audrey, have made their home in Indio since 2008. Originally from the southern Orange County area, Gary liked to hike the hills and trails of the areas there. Moving to the desert area, Gary looked to continue hiking, and joined the DTHC shortly after arriving to the desert. Gary retired from the Mortgage Industry and continues to do some contracting work. That work prevents him from making commitments as a Hike Leader at this time, so instead Gary has agreed to help in other ways, primarily as Treasurer and Membership Coordinator.
