This week will be Red Dome and maybe a little farther into the Whitewater Canyon. Red Dome is a 20' high brick red hill of volcanic mud. We will hike 5 miles round trip, out and back along the Pacific Crest Trail with total elevation gain of approximately 400'. "Thursday Mods" are weekly hikes for those interested in 5-10 mile strolls with mostly gentle elevation ups and downs and stops every 15-20 minutes to smell the cresote (or whatever might have a nice aroma). The Indio Hills Trail in Indio. This trail is in good shape, but we will take a hike around the loop and rake, remove cobble, place some signage and improve drainage as needed. Please meet at the Coachella Valley Horse Rescue Stables (11 on the DTHC Direction Finder) at 700am. This is a Rain or Shine Project, so if you get up and if its too wet for you, no worries. Since rain is so spotty around here, we will make a decision when we get there. The Rescue Stables are at the end of Monroe Street in Indio. From I-10, exit to Monroe North. Go to the end of Monroe and look for the last dirt street before you enter the Granite gravel operation. Turn right onto this road and it will be several hundred yards on the right. The trail at this point is about 4 miles and we will try to wrap it up by about noon. Bring all your Trail work supplies and gear. MLK 2019 Trail Clean up Community Service Project January 21, 2019 Palm Desert. Check the BREAKING NEWS page for more info. Berlinda Blackburn is working to coordinate a service project in the city of Palm Desert scheduled for January 21, 2019 which is observed as the MLK holiday. Specifically, she would like to put a group together to clean up the hiking trails near Edgehill and Painted Path in Palm Desert near the Bump and Grind and trails leading to Cahuilla Hills and Adams Park. These open spaces are used by thousands of folks every year and lately she has noticed a lot of trash that is either windblown or just left by folks accessing the open spaces. This strenuous 6-7 hour loop hike requires agility, flexibility and some scrambling experience to negotiate the boulders and vegetation that crowd sections of this remote canyon in the Queen Mountain area (JTNP). The reward at the end of the hike is a collection of water-sculpted, polished rock slabs full of deep potholes. Short side treks lead to a waterfall and to an overlook above the Wonderland of Rocks. Mon Mar 25 West Side Loop & Nature Trail Combo (Joshua Tree National Park)  Meet time: 8 am

This hike combines the West Side and Nature Trail loops in the Black Rock area of Joshua Tree NP. Highlights include views of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, pinyon pine, juniper, manzanita, Joshua trees and more. Some steep/rough sections. (Non-members welcome; max hikers:15 )

Coachella Valley Preserve's newer trail overlooking spectacularly eroded Moon Country and the San Andreas Fault. This is a 6.25 mile out and back, with 967 feet of gain. We will start at the WILLIS PALMS TRIALHEAD. Moderate to Fast pace, 30 minute/mile. (Non-members welcome; max hikers:15 )
